Boris Pasternak wrote poetry that made him famous in Russia and a novel that made him famous everywhere else. "Doctor Zhivago" won the 1958 Nobel Prize in Literature, which Soviet authorities forced him to decline. The novel's smuggled publication became Cold War episode. Pasternak proved that literature could survive totalitarianism.
