Chloe Aridjis (born 1971 in New York City) is a Mexican American novelist raised between Mexico City and the Netherlands, the eldest daughter of the Mexican poet and diplomat Homero Aridjis. She earned a degree in comparative literature from Harvard and a doctorate from Oxford on nineteenth-century French poetry and magic lanterns, supervised by Malcolm Bowie. Her debut novel, Book of Clouds (2009), won France's Prix du Premier Roman Étranger; Asunder (2013) is set among the guards of London's National Gallery; and Sea Monsters (2019), about a teenager who runs away in Mexico City, won the 2020 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction. Her fourth novel, The Shadow of the Object (2026), was longlisted for the Booker Prize. Aridjis has written essays for Granta and Frieze, co-curated a Leonora Carrington exhibition at Tate Liverpool (2015), holds a 2014 Guggenheim Fellowship, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. She lives in London.
