Chris Kraus is an American writer, art critic and filmmaker born in 1955 in New York. She made experimental films in the 1980s and moved into writing in the 1990s. With Sylvère Lotringer she co-edited the Native Agents series at Semiotext(e), where she published her own work. Her first novel, I Love Dick (1997), is built from letters written to a man she barely knew, and it became a landmark of autofiction. It was adapted into a television series in 2017. Her other books include Aliens & Anorexia, Torpor, Video Green: Los Angeles Art and the Triumph of Nothingness, and After Kathy Acker, a biography of the writer Kathy Acker. She has written art criticism for many publications and has taught writing at the European Graduate School. Her novels mix memoir, theory and fiction, and they influenced a generation of writers working with first-person and confessional forms.
