Ernst Robert Curtius was a German literary scholar and Romance philologist whose European Literature and the Latin Middle Ages, published in 1948, argued for the fundamental unity of Western literary culture against the nationalist philologies that had contributed to the catastrophe of two world wars. The book is a monument of philological learning and a passionate act of cultural recovery.
