Marina Tsvetaeva was one of the greatest Russian poets of the twentieth century. Her work is characterized by its formal daring, emotional intensity, and syntactic compression. She spent much of her adult life in emigration before returning to the Soviet Union in 1939. Her major works include the long poems Poem of the Mountain and Poem of the End, and her lyric poetry is among the finest in the Russian language.
