Mercè Rodoreda was a Catalan novelist and short-story writer, widely regarded as the most important Catalan writer of the twentieth century. Exiled after the Spanish Civil War, she lived in France and Switzerland for decades. Her masterpiece, The Time of the Doves, is considered one of the great European novels. She wrote exclusively in Catalan, a language suppressed under the Franco regime.
