Walt Whitman worked as a journalist, printer, teacher, and Civil War hospital volunteer before and after producing the most revolutionary collection in American poetry. His Leaves of Grass, self-published in 1855 and expanded across six editions, invented free verse as a vehicle for democratic vision. Emerson called it 'the most extraordinary piece of wit and wisdom that America has yet contributed.'
