William Trevor was shortlisted for the Booker Prize multiple times and won the Whitbread Prize for "The Children of Dynmouth" (1976) and "Fools of Fortune" (1983). The Irish author wrote short stories and novels about ordinary people caught in circumstances beyond their control. His prose is quiet; his sympathy is vast. He died in 2016.
